Oct. 7 JELL Symposium: Sustainable land use and Measure 37

2005 JELL Symposium
Sustainable Land Use and Measure 37

Oregon’s controversial new land-use compensation law is the topic for “Sustainable Land Use and Measure 37,” a free public symposium to be held at the University of Oregon School of Law from 9:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. on Friday, October 7.

<> The event is sponsored by the Journal of Environmental Law and Litigation. It will take place in Room 141 of the Knight Law Center, 1515 Agate Street on the UO campus in Eugene.

In November 2004, Oregon voters passed Ballot Measure 37, an initiative that provides compensation for landowners when land-use regulations reduce the value of their property or prevent them from using it in ways they see fit.  This symposium will address many of the questions about the measure that still remain.

Local attorneys, judges and activists on both sides of the issue will discuss the history of land use in Oregon, the initiative process, legislative attempts at reconciling different interests, and current litigation. Speakers include Glenn Klein, Eugene’s city attorney; David Hunnicutt of Oregonians in Action; and Carrie McLaren of 1000 Friends of Oregon. UO law professor Tom Lininger will discuss a local development controversy— a proposed gas-fired power plant in the village of Coburg, ten miles north of Eugene.
