Oregon Law Students Advance in Mediation Competition

Oregon Law students Laura Williamson, Jia Min Cheng, Michelle Platt and Amanda Fernandez will compete at the American Bar Association’s Representation in Mediation Competition for Law Students’ regional competition at the University of California’s Hastings College of the Law on Saturday, March 1, and Sunday, March 2.  The students out-performed 20 competitors at Oregon Law’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Advocates’ annual mediation advocacy competition on Saturday, Feb. 9, to advance in the competition.

During the competition, students role-play as advocates and clients in a mediation setting.  Students are judged on preparation, teamwork, how well the interests of the client are represented, using opportunities in the mediation process, and other elements of effective advocacy in mediation.  Regional competition winners are invited to compete at the National Finals in Seattle, Wash., held the first week of April in conjunction with the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution’s Annual Meeting.
