Oregon Law Students Participate in United Nations Meeting of the Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee in Switzerland

Oregon Law students Brook Meakins, Christopher Smith and Yige Zhang recently participated in the United Nations meeting of the Compliance Committee of the Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Marking and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Oregon Law Professor and Director of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law LL.M. Program, Svitlana Kravchenko, helped organize the students’ participation in the meeting.  Professor Kravchenko serves as the Compliance Committee’s Vice-Chair and was recently unanimously re-nominated to the Committee.

“Being in class and reading about Aarhus Conventions is nothing compared to the invaluable experience of being able to sit in and listen to an actual Compliance Committee meeting,” said Christopher Smith.  “It brings what you have been studying to life in a vibrant way that allows you to appreciate the complexities of international environmental law.”

Brook Meakins echoed Christopher’s appreciation for the trip by saying, “Attending the Compliance Committee meeting was eye-opening and inspiring.  Even just being in the United Nations building reminded me that my legal career possibilities are limitless.”
