Oregon Law Alumni Make Headlines as Convention Delegates

Oregon Law graduates Moe Spencer ’05, and Melyssa Swartz-Baxter ’05, have been gracing the pages of newspapers and Web sites recently as delegates participating in the Democratic and Republican national conventions, respectively.

On August 27, MSNBC.com posted an emotional image of Spencer at the Democratic National Convention, which took place August 25-28, moments after the nomination of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. The single image of Spencer represents the feelings of multitudes of Americans who witnessed the historical significance of the first-ever African-American nominated for president of the United States by a major political party.

On August 30, The Oregonian interviewed Swartz-Baxter regarding her participation in the Republican National Convention and her support of Arizona Sen. John McCain for president. Swartz-Baxter remarked that bringing the Republican Party together and energizing people for McCain were her hopes for the convention, which took place September 1-4.
