Professor Merle Weiner to Speak at Conference in Qatar November 19-20

Oregon Law Professor Merle Weiner will participate in a colloquium focusing on the impact of violence against women on the family, sponsored by the Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development, November 19-20 in Qatar.
Professor Weiner will speak in particular about approaches and strategies in the United  Professor Merle Weiner States to end violence against women. Overall, the colloquium seeks to: contribute to the campaign of the secretary general of the United Nations to end violence against women; raise awareness about the nature, extent, and causes of violence against women in the Gulf region and the world; build collaboration among policy makers, research centers, international institutions, and non-governmental organizations in order to exchange information and best practices; and support innovative approaches and strategies to end violence against women.
Additional colloquium participants include United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon speaking on gender issues; Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, executive director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); Yakin Erturk, United Nations special rapporteur on Violence against Women; and Dubravka Simonovic, chairperson of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
