Former Oregon Supreme Court Justice Betty Roberts to Participate in Video Conference August 27
Former Oregon Supreme Court Justice Betty Roberts will participate in a video conference with Oregon Law’s Women in the Law class from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, August 27.
Justice Roberts will discuss how far women have come in the past few decades as lawyers, judges, and legislators, and the challenges that lie ahead for women. Roberts’ memoir, With Grit and By Grace: Breaking Trails in Law and Politics is assigned reading for the class.
Justice Roberts’ commitment to overcoming obstacles to women’s equality began in the 1950s when she did what was socially unacceptable and returned to college as a 32-year-old wife and mother. Since that time, Roberts held a successful 13-year tenure as a legislator in which she was instrumental in the passage of Oregon’s first legalized right to abortion and the state’s ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, as well as groundbreaking environmental and land-use regulation.
