Oregon Law Remembers Former Instructor, Alumnus Paul Beneke ’96

Paul Beneke, 1996 Oregon Law graduate and former instructor and associate director of the school’s Legal Research and Writing (LRW) Program, passed away on July 25. Beneke was 40 years old.

Beneke was a Minnesota native who attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Wisconsin-Madison, earning his undergraduate degree in 1992. He went on to attend the University of Oregon School of Law, graduating with his law degree in 1996.

LRW Director Suzanne Rowe said Beneke was a dedicated educator who was adored by his students.

“Paul was kind, generous with his time, and passionate about teaching. He was incredibly committed to LRW and supportive of those who taught with him.”

In addition to his work with the law school, Beneke volunteered countless hours of service with Legal Aid, providing outreach to Oakridge, Oregon. In 2001, he began practicing criminal defense at Southern Oregon Public Defenders Inc. (SOPD) in Medford. Beneke was a respected lead attorney at SOPD and remained employed there until his death. He was a member of the Oregon Bar Association since 1996 and was elected to the board of directors of the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association in 2009.

A private service and Remembrance of Life Celebration was held in Ashland, Oregon, and a private service will be held this week in Minnesota.
