Wayne Morse Center Opens Speaker Series with Author, Historian Thaddeus Russell Today

Author and historian Thaddeus Russell will kick off the 2010-11 Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics Public Affairs Speaker Series at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 12, in Knight Law Center 175.

Mr. Russell’s presentation is titled after his groundbreaking new book, A Renegade History of the United States, that was released on September 28. In his book, Russell claims that the nation’s history has been driven by clashes between those interested in preserving social order and those more interested in pursuing their own desires. The more these accidental revolutionaries existed, resisted, and persevered, the more receptive society became to change. Rather than crediting the standard textbook icons, Russell demonstrates that it was those on the fringes of society whose subversive lifestyles helped legitimize the taboo and made America the land of the free.
