Sen. Ron Wyden '74 and Jody Stahancyk '73 reunite for awards ceremony
Senator Ron Wyden ’74 visited the downtown Portland office of Stahancyk, Kent & Hook P.C. last month to present senior shareholder Jody Stahancyk ’73 with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award and the Above and Beyond Award.
The awards recognize employers who go above and beyond the legal requirements for granting leave to and supporting military personnel. Stahancyk was nominated for the Patriot Award by Chief Petty Officer Lisa Zimmerman, senior legal assistant at Stahancyk, Kent & Hook and an active member of the Navy Reserve. Upon reading Zimmerman’s impressive nominating statement, the ESGR found Stahancyk and the law firm deserving of the Above and Beyond Award as well.
In his presentation speech, Senator Wyden, who was also a classmate of Stahancyk’s at the University of Oregon School of Law, described the importance of employer support for reservists and military personnel. He called employers’ help of returning military employees a “soft landing.” He also stated that Oregon “couldn’t do what we do as a state, in terms of making a contribution to our country’s national security at a critical time — without employers like Jody.”
Stahancyk accepted the award on behalf of the entire Stahancyk, Kent & Hook P.C. firm. In her acceptance speech, she said, “This isn’t an award for me, it’s an award for every single person who works here because we all support Lisa in her military career — this is how you support each other when you’re part of a family, and every single person here is part of our family.”
