Professor Emeritus Gene Scoles makes gift to law school in name of Professor Emeritus Jim Mooney

Oregon Law Professor Emeritus Jim Mooney is the recipient of a signal honor. Distinguished Professor Emeritus Gene Scoles recently made a significant gift to the Law School Fund for Teaching Excellence in his name. The two professors have been colleagues for 40 years.

Professor Scoles noted Professor Mooney’s dedication to his students among his many reasons making the gift in his name.

“Jim Mooney is a true academic; a teacher and scholar vitally interested in his students from their introduction to the conclusion of their law study,” Scoles said. “His first year class in Contracts introduced his students to both the legal profession and interactive law school class work. His teaching demanded prior preparation and active involvement of his students on a daily basis. He rigorously evaluated students’ performance in timely and just fashion. My forty-year experience as his colleague has been the source of great satisfaction to me and leads to this personal recognition of his greatness as a law teacher.”

“I feel honored beyond words that such an eminent and beloved legal educator as Gene Scoles would make such a handsome gift in my honor,” Professor Mooney said. “Gene’s many academic contributions to our school are, of course, legendary, and this latest noble gesture simply reaffirms yet again what a caring, generous human being he is as well.”

Professor Mooney is an authority on and has written extensively about American legal history and contract law. His major work in progress is a judicial biography of Matthew Deady, Oregon’s first federal district judge. He has won law school and university awards for teaching excellence. Mooney joined the UO faculty in 1972, after working with Howard, Prim, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady & Pollak in San Francisco, specializing in commercial litigation before federal and state courts and administrative agencies.

The Fund for Teaching Excellence provides the financial resources for faculty to improve their instruction techniques.
