Judicial Writing Seminar

Spring 2013 • LAW 607 • Credits: 1

This is a writing-intensive course that will satisfy the Skills Requirement. The course will cover topics including the structure of opinions, the purpose of opinions, the process of writing opinions, and the writing style of various judges. In addition, the course will consider the role of the law clerk and will include guest presentations by judges and their clerks. Readings will include law review articles, excerpts from texts on judicial opinion writing, and opinions authored by celebrated judicial writers. Students will draft a majority opinion and a dissenting opinion for a pending appeal.
