Copyright law governs the protection of works of creative expression, including books, films, music, photographs, and the fine arts. This course provides an introduction to the basic law of copyright, examining the governing statutory scheme and key judicial decisions. Covered topics include copyrightable subject matter, originality and authorship, transferring and licensing copyrights, exclusive rights, infringement, and fair use. The course will also explore the purposes and principles underlying our system of copyright law, the law's role in light of the internet and our changing technological society, and international aspects of copyright law.
