Undocumented Kids: Detained, Deported and Alone
12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Room 110
Contact: Leslie Harris • Email
The New York Times recently reported that although the rate of undocumented immigrants entering the U.S. is at a 40-year low, the number of children entering unlawfully and alone is surging, largely because of drug-fueled violence in Central America, particularly Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. "One in 13 people caught by the Border Patrol last fiscal year were under 18. Seventeen percent of them were 13 or younger. Close to 14,000 minors, twice as many as the previous year, were placed in federal custody. (This figure doesnt include an equal number of Mexican children who were quickly deported.)" Many of these children could qualify for asylum or for other status that would allow them to stay in the U.S., but less than 10 percent of kids who seek to remain in the U.S. win their cases. Those with legal representation are 9 times as likely to win, but most of these children have no lawyer. Learn more about this problem from an Immigration attorney with particular expertise in immigration and the family, and an anthropologist who studies migrant youth, especially from Guatemala.

Sponsored by OCAP and LALSA.
