By the mid 1970s, a "coal coalition" of coal producers, oil and gas, metals, electric utilities, railroads, and commercial banks emerged producing coordinated efforts against threats to their profits from environmental regulation. This talk will examine subsequent changes in the political economy of the coal industry and its position within the larger corporate power structure and think tanks of US policy formation network. Mapping coal within this network yields a better understanding of the problems of environmental regulation today.

From an initial gathering of just fifteen speakers and seventy-five participants in 1983, we have grown to become the world’s most important environmental law conference.

With assistance from keynoters, panelists, and participants alike, we plan to inspire a renewed commitment to collaboration and outreach among conference attendees. We expect the conference to enhance the success of environmental lawyers and to contribute to a more vigorous movement that resonates across society.

In India, China and many other parts of the world today, girls are killed, aborted and abandoned simply because they are girls. The film tells the stories of abandoned and trafficked girls, of women who suffer extreme dowry-related violence, of brave mothers fighting to save their daughters’ lives, and of other mothers who would kill for a son. Global experts and grassroots activists put the stories in context and advocate different paths towards change.
