Fall On-Campus Recruiting
Through the fall on-campus recruiting program, some legal employers collect Oregon Law students’ resumes; others go a step farther, conducting a first round of interviews on campus. No matter what your short-term and long-term professional goals are, you should make the on-campus recruiting program part of your job search this fall. While most participating employers are law firms, other kinds of employers – including government offices – visit campus annually as well.
Plan to participate. No matter what, you will benefit from participating in the on-campus recruiting program. At a minimum, you will gain valuable experience and readiness by preparing application materials tailored for the opportunities advertised by participating employers. You may also have a chance to practice your interviewing and networking skills. You could even find a job. If you have not already signed an information release this spring, please do so; we can not forward your application materials to an employer until you have completed this step.
Research employers. The employers that have registered for the program so far are listed below. As of May 21, you can view an updated list on Symplicity by logging on through the Career Center’s webpage and choosing OCI and the correct session in the filters. Research the employers by looking at websites, reading the news, and talking to professors, friends, colleagues, or alumni. Check Symplicity often; we expect additional employers to sign up throughout the summer. Do not apply directly to employers that are participating in the on-campus recruiting program.
Research other employers, too. Late summer is the time to apply to large firms, regardless of whether they are visiting our campus. If you are interested in large firms that are not coming to campus, please see us; our input can make a difference. Then check the NALP Directory of Legal Employers at http://www.nalpdirectory.com. If you haven’t made a connection at your target firm, you can send your application materials to the Recruiting Contact.
Create or update your materials. Your resume should concisely describe your education and relevant experiences. Your cover letter should persuade the reader that you are interested in and qualified for the specific position you seek. Your writing sample should demonstrate your analytical abilities, your writing skills, and your attention to detail. Come see us for help.
Polish and upload those materials. They must be flawless. Print them out and review them carefully at least five times. Then upload them to Symplicity for our review. For an overview of uploading your documents and the OCI process, please see http://www.law.uoregon.edu/career/oci/policy/. Application deadlines appear below. Please do not wait until the last minute; start preparing your materials today, and submit them as early as possible during the application period.
Round 1: Apply by August 15 (interviews occur September 4-11)
Employers listed are those scheduled as of April 12, 2012.
Round 2: Apply by September 12 (interviews occur September 27-October 11)
Employers listed are those scheduled as of April 12, 2012.
