FACEBOOK: The Addendum to Your Resume
Published in the November 29, 2011, Advisor
We know that you are as tired of reading about Facebook as we are of writing about it. You have the power to bring an end to these columns. Please heed our advice.
- Demonstrate sound judgment: allow only friends to access your Facebook page. We recently heard from a law firm that the firm declines to interview candidates with publicly available pages even if those pages don’t contain particularly inappropriate photographs or posts.
- Post smart. Even after you enhance your privacy settings, clean up your Facebook page and keep it clean. Facebook gives employers an opportunity to see the real you behind your resume and cover letter. The legal community is smaller than you think it is, and your friends are becoming better connected every day.
- Just don’t do it. If you have a question about whether you should post something, you shouldn’t. Trusting your instincts can help you avoid a potentially costly misstep.
