The Journal of Environmental Law and Litigation selects its members from an annual write-on competition, open to rising 2L and 3L students at Oregon Law. The three-week write-on competition consists of a memo exercise in which competitors are provided with a prompt and a closed universe of sources, and a lengthy editing exercise. The editing exercise is comprised of a lengthy abridged written work containing numerous errors in the footnotes and text, which competitors must correct according to The Bluebook and The Chicago Manual of Style.
In their first year on JELL, students serve as Staff Editors. Students are eligible to run for Managing Board positions in their second year. Managing Board members are elected by a vote of all members of JELL.
