Loan Repayment Assistance Program

Dawn Winalski

Clerk, Multnomah County Judicial Clerk, LRAP Program 2011, 2012

As a judicial clerk, Dawn Winalski watches and learns from other lawyers, seeking to improve her advocacy skills for her future public interest career. Dawn’s career plans “have always focused on protecting the public interest, particularly as it relates to a clean environment and public health.”

During law school, Dawn took advantage of externship opportunities, working for the US Department of Justice, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide. After graduation, Dawn has volunteered for several non-profit organizations, including WaterWatch of Oregon, and Food and Water Watch. About her activities, she reports, “Each of these positions has enabled me to continue my passion for working in the public interest. And working at the courthouse has given me a better understanding of the nuts and bolts of the practice of law.”

As for her future after her clerkship, Dawn reflects, “I will continue working in the public interest. I made this commitment to myself before entering law school — knowing the cost of school and the low pay available in the public interest arena. The LRAP award has allowed me to pay down some of my loans, which will be a huge help in allowing me to take positions I am passionate about as I continue my legal career.”
