Loan Repayment Assistance Program

Michael Quillin

Staff Attorney, Lane County Legal Aid & Advocacy Center, LRAP Program 2011, 2012

With a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Cellular Biology, and a ten-year career as a Research Associate in Molecular Biology, Michael Quillin easily could have used his law degree to pursue a lucrative career in patent law. However, with a big heart for the underprivileged and a sense of responsibility to give back to his community, Michael instead began to pursue a career in public service. Michael says, “I really feel a strong need to serve the public and do what I can to improve our world.”

As the only male attorney at the Survivors Justice Center, Michael represents survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence in civil legal matters including protective orders, divorce and custody issues, housing and benefits. In helping survivors, he immediately impacts their world by helping them feel safer and supported. Michael states, “When the client come out of the courtroom and looks incredibly relieved-that makes this job so rewarding.”

With two children to support plus extraordinary educational debt, staying in public service is challenging for Michael. He reports, “Without the Loan Repayment Assistance Program, I would not be able to do this work.”
