* About Minoru Yasui: On the evening
of March 28, 1942, UO graduate Minoru Yasui Ã37, LL.B. Ã39 broke the
law. He walked up and down PortlandÃs Third Avenue for two hours and
insisted on being arrested for breaking curfew laws specifically aimed
at Japanese citizens after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Yasui spent the
weekend in the drunk tank. Convicted and stripped of his U.S.
citizenship, he underwent months of indignity and solitary confinement
before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1943 reinstated his citizenship.
Through the 1970s and 1980s, Denver community leader and civil rights
attorney Yasui fought for redress and apology. He died in 1986, just
two years before redress legislation was passed and signed.
