 Wayne Morse Center Co-Sponsors Conference Exploring Violence, Human Rights and Reconciliation in Latin America January 31 to February 2

A free, three-day conference, “Violence and Reconciliation in America,” will be held at the University of Oregon starting Thursday, Jan. 31.  More than 20 guest speakers will examine the ways Latin American societies attempt to deal with their recent past of violence and human rights violations, as well as what lessons can be learned from attempts to build democratic and just societies in the region.  

Professor Arturo Escobar, Wayne Morse Center Chair for Law and Politics, will present the opening keynote speech, “Left Turn, Right Turn?  Where is Latin America Going?” at 7 p.m., Jan. 31, in the EMU Ballroom.  The conference will conclude Saturday, Feb. 2.  For a complete schedule of speakers and panel discussions, visit the conference Web site.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics and the Savage Endowment for International Relations and Peace, and is organized by the University of Oregon Latin American Studies Program.
