UO Law grad headed to Cambridge

Starla Hargita to pursue master of laws at University of Cambridge

Starla Hargita, a 2011 University of Oregon School of Law graduate, was accepted to the prestigious University of Cambridge to pursue a LL.M. (master of laws) degree. Her focus will be in legal philosophy.

“I was and am totally enthralled, humbled, and excited,” Hargita said about the news of her acceptance. “It’s a little overwhelming to think about the history of education at Cambridge, and legal education at that. But I am so genuinely excited to become a part of that history.”

A dual J.D/master’s degree student while at Oregon Law, Hargita’s work focused on Negotiation and Judicial Perspectives. Hargita said her love of learning was the inspiration behind her application to Cambridge. She hopes this new opportunity will open the door to a career engrossed in teaching and research.

“I enjoy the challenge of formal education, and couldn’t quite come to terms with finishing my education just yet,” she noted. “I felt like an LL.M. was a great way to delve a bit deeper into my legal interests.”

Hargita praised the Oregon Law faculty for preparing her to take this next step in her academic career. She said the warm and supportive intellectual environment they provided was inspirational.

“The faculty’s enthusiasm for the law and theory is infectious,” Hargita said. “My professors went the extra step to recognize my unique interests and foster my creative leanings. This encouragement combined with a healthy dose of the Socratic method gave me the confidence to test new theories and expand my horizons.”

Oregon Law Dean Michael Moffitt praised Hargita as a fantastic student with an incredibly bright future.

“Starla took full advantage of the law school, of the master’s program in conflict and dispute resolution, and of the interdisciplinary opportunities available at a major research university like ours,” he said. “I cannot imagine a better ambassador for our school as she heads off to Cambridge. We are proud to call her an Oregon alumna.”
