Suzanne Rowe wins prestigious award for contributions to Oregon State Bar Bulletin

University of Oregon School of Law professor Suzanne Rowe recently received the 2012 Oregon State Bar President's Public Leadership Award for her contributions to the column “The Legal Writer.” The column appears regularly in the Oregon State Bar Bulletin and tackles legal writing problems from a fresh perspective.

Rowe, who serves as the law school’s Director of Legal Research and Writing, says the award was completely unexpected.

“Writing the column is something I enjoy very much, and receiving this award is a delightful bonus,” Rowe said.

The column’s longevity also came as a surprise to Rowe. When she founded “The Legal Writer” in 2006, she had no idea it would remain popular for so long.

“I hear from readers not only in Oregon, but across the country,” Rowe said.

Rowe has written over 40 articles for “The Legal Writer.” Contributing columnists have included Oregon Law legal research and writing professors Megan McAlpin, Elizabeth Frost and Joan Rocklin, and Rebekah Hanley, Assistant Dean for the Center for Career Planning and Professional Development. Sam Jacobson, who taught Legal Research and Writing and Administrative Law at Willamette University, and Tenielle Fordyce-Ruff, Director of the Legal Research & Writing Program at the Concordia University School of Law, have also contributed.

Rowe has extensive legal writing, editing and research experience. While studying at the Columbia University School of Law, she was a Stone Scholar and a notes editor for the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law. In the past she has served on the boards of the Association of Legal Writing Directors and the Legal Writing Institute. After graduating from Columbia and clerking for a federal judge, she practiced tax law in Washington, D.C. before joining Oregon Law. In 2011 she was named the James L. and Ilene R. Hershner Professor of Law. Over her career she has authored six books on legal research and is the editor for the Legal Research Series.

In 2011, Rowe was honored with the Orlando J. Hollis Faculty Teaching Award, and she was the 2012 recipient of the Thomas F. Blackwell Award for outstanding achievement in legal writing.
