Lane County Circuit Court Judge Frank Alderson '51 died July 27, 2012. He was 86. Alderson served in the Navy during World War II and married Phyllis Egner in 1952. Alderson was president of the Eugene Jaycees, a longtime member of Eugene’s First Christian Church and joined the Eugene Downtown Lions Club. As a member of the Lions, he received multiple awards, including the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his humanitarian work. He served as district attorney for Klamath County in the early 1950s, when he was known for his fight against prostitution, gambling and corruption. He then served as assistant district attorney for Lane County from 1955 to 1961, followed by being appointed as a district court judge for Lane County. Alderson retired after having served for 31 years in 1992.
Longtime former resident of Medford, Oregon, Bernard Kelly '54 died in Olympia, Washington, on February 14, 2013. He was 83. Kelly served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957, then he joined the law firm Kelly and Kelly. Following this, he formed a law firm with friend and partner Bob Grant, until he moved to Alaska in 1970 and continued to have a successful career as a trial attorney.
County counsel for Washington County, Oregon, and Hillsboro Attorney Loretta Skurdahl '82 died on March 23, 2013. She was 57. Skurdahl worked for more than 30 years for Washington County, serving as county counsel and rising to Senior Assistant County Counsel.
Sacramento County Prosecutor Kathleen Navarra '06 died on March 22, 2013. She was 31. Two weeks after finishing law school, Navarra was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. She spent a year undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery before passing the state bar exam and going to work as a deputy district attorney. She handled misdemeanors and juvenile cases before joining the felony bureau.
