Oregon Child Advocacy Project 2013-14 fellows announced

The Oregon Child Advocacy Project (OCAP) at Oregon Law pursues justice for children through faculty and student work on legislative proposals, research assistance, as well as consult with attorneys in cases that advance the project’s goals. Instead of representing individual clients, OCAP pursues legal change at a higher level.

Each year, fellows are selected to advance OCAP and its many initiatives. The following Oregon Law students have been selected as OCAP fellows for the 2013-14 academic year:

The Campbell Child Advocacy Fellows:
Linda Bruce – 2L
Colleen O'Malley – 2L
Tyler Neish – 1L
Jason Pierson – 1L
Jenna Royce – 1L

Next year, for the first time, OCAP will have Oregon Child Advocacy Project Fellows who are responsible for particular projects:
Christopher Gray – 2L
Kelsey Fleharty – 2L
Carrie Murray – 2L
Nate Gurol – 1L

While the fellows and project fellows have the opportunity to oversee the OCAP activities and projects, summer externs are selected to serve throughout the community.

“The externship clearly made the law come alive for me–it was thrilling to sit in the family courtroom, watching the proceedings, contemplating the various different roles of the people at the table (including the clients), reading the case files and discussing the cases with the Judge.” – Hubert Chang '08 externed with Multnomah County judge in 2006.

Each student placed with a judge acts as a clerk, doing research and preparing for hearings, as well as preparing a major law reform project at the direction of the judge. Each student placed in the Juvenile Rights Project prepares cases, observes court proceedings, and, if a third-year student, appears in court. Additionally, he or she works on a law reform project.

Six students also have been selected for child advocacy externships this summer:
Ralitza Kostadinova – 1L, Jenna Royce: Youth, Rights and Justice, Portland
Nate Gurol – 1L: Multnomah County Circuit Court, Judge Svetkey
Tyler Neish – 1L: Multnomah County Circuit Court, Judge Hughes
Ryan Kulback – 2L: Clatsop County Circuit Court, Judge Brownhill
Janae Bly – 2L: Linn County Circuit Court, Judge Murphy
