OLSPIF Posts Record Fall Fundraising Outcomes

By Jane Steckbeck
Associate Director for Public Service Initiatives

The Oregon Law Students Public Interest Fund has just completed its most successful fall fundraising cycle in a 22-year history! With the law school’s Wayne Morse Commons decked out with lights and snowflakes, OLSPIF’s “Flurry of Giving” fundraiser enjoyed inspiring participation among alumni, students, faculty and administrators. Similarly, the Partners in Public Service Reception Silent Auction in Portland united public service student leaders with alumni, judges and public service attorneys in Portland for a delightful social and fundraising event. Together, the events earned close to $4,000 for OLSPIF.

OLSPIF awards summer stipends to students to work in public service positions that would otherwise be unpaid. Last year, OLSPIF awarded a record 15 stipends, allowing students to assist migrant farmworkers, juveniles aging out of foster care, immigrant survivors of domestic violence, low income families and many others. Simply put, an OLSPIF stipend is a powerful vehicle for social good, benefitting law students, budget-strapped organizations and the clients they serve.

Typically, OLSPIF has raised funds for summer stipends exclusively through its February auction. In expanding its fundraising endeavors to fall events, OLSPIF is taking its mission to the next level. The “Flurry of Giving” fundraiser asked participants to purchase snowflakes of $1, $5, or $10, based on size. For snowflakes purchased online, OLSPIF Board members decorated the snowflakes; and students, faculty and staff made snowflakes at an OLSPIF craft table available throughout November. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, a team of OLSPIF Board Members and administrators hung the snowflakes with twinkle lights to brighten the law school’s main thoroughfare through finals and the holidays!

While some OLSPIF Board members managed the Flurry of Giving fundraiser, others worked to make the Partners in Public Service Reception a success. A collaborative effort of the Public Interest Public Service Program, (“PIPS”), Pro Bono Program, (“PBP”), and OLSPIF Boards, the Portland-based Partners Reception celebrates public service with our alumni, public service attorneys, judges and others. Telling the stories of OLSPIF Stipend Recipients, Pro Bono and public service performers, the Partners Reception is a lively, vital event, fostering valuable connections between the law school, students and Portland-based alumni. This year’s Silent Auction sparked some spirited bidding wars for items such as the Civil War Football package, Columbia Sportswear jacket, Powell’s shopping spree with a Café Yumm! lunch and tickets to Portland Center Stage with dinner at E-San Thai Cuisine, among others!

While managing these successful fall events, OLSPIF fundraisers have been busy securing items and packages for the February auction. Scheduled for Friday, February 17, 2012, at the Eugene Country Club, the OLSPIF Auction will again feature the popular Authentica Wines Wall of Wine, “60 Ducks for 50 Bucks Raffle” (offering lovely jewelry and quality wine prizes), an expanded Dessert Auction, and return of wildly popular live auction items such as the Eugene Scotch Guild’s Scotch Tasting and Dean Michael Moffitt’s “Vino Moffitto” evening of quality wine tasting. Participants can also expect to bid on various resort and spa packages, theatre/dinner items and much, much more!

The success of last year’s auction allowed more Oregon Law students than ever before to receive support for their public service work, thus helping vulnerable individuals access legal help. OLSPIF is working hard to ensure that auction 2012 surpasses last year’s outcomes. With broad participation from alumni, local attorneys, businesses, faculty and students, we’re expecting another recordbreaking year!
