Oregon Law Students Public Interest Fund

Killian Doherty

This summer I was a legal intern with the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW), a dynamic international network of environmental lawyers, scientists, and advocates from over seventy countries. Because the internship with this great non-profit organization is unpaid, I am extremely grateful for the OLSPIF stipend. KillianDoherty

During my summer internship with ELAW, I provided legal research assistance to the Staff Attorneys in the U.S. office of ELAW and to ELAW partners around the world who are advocating for a more sustainable and more just society. The experience was very rewarding because I had the opportunity to work on human rights and public-interest environmental concerns that affect many people’s lives. I researched technical environmental matters – such as regulatory frameworks for agricultural field burning and interstate watershed management – as well as related human rights concerns regarding freedom of assembly, access to information, and public participation.

My summer internship experience with ELAW was also very beneficial professionally because I received excellent feedback and mentoring from the Staff Attorneys with whom I worked in ELAW’s U.S. office. Moreover, interning with ELAW allowed me to research and to better understand many areas of law and many social and environmental concerns that I intend to work with for the rest of my life. The experience definitely reaffirmed my professional interests and aspirations in human rights and public-interest environmental law, which may not have been possible without an OLSPIF stipend.
