Carol Pratt ’08
Combining legal degree and medical experience to focus her career in health and intellectual property law
Carol Pratt ’08 serves as a partner with the law firm of K&L Gates LLP in Portland, Ore. K&L Gates comprises more than 2,000 lawyers who practice in 46 offices located on five continents. Pratt is also a national leader in the application of HIPPA and has presented at numerous conferences on the topic. Prior to her work at K&L Gates, Pratt was an active neuroscientist for 20 years with a focus on spinal chord physiology.
Pratt’s desire to work in health law prompted her to attend law school. Oregon Law was a natural choice for her because she wanted to stay in Oregon. “The faculty had a strong commitment to teaching, not just to scholarship,” said Pratt. “Also, the Oregon Law school faculty was balanced between women and men and had diversity of expertise in specific legal areas.” In addition to her legal studies, Pratt was an active member of the Moot Court as well as the Women’s Law Forum.
As an attorney working in health law, Pratt’s focus is on regulatory issues associated with research, development and FDA requirements that apply to health products. Pratt’s clients work in an array of pre-clinical and clinical positions. She enjoys helping clients get new medical and health technologies into the marketplace. Oregon Law’s broad-based legal education assisted in her success as a K&L Gates partner.
