Chad Marriott ’09
Environmental passion translates into successful legal career
Chad Marriott ’09 is an associate in the Energy and Telecommunications group at Stoel Rives LLP in Portland. He concentrates his practice on project development for a variety of renewable and more traditional energy technologies, including wind, solar, hydro, natural gas, tidal and wave power.
After teaching high school English and outdoor education to students with learning and developmental disabilities for a few years, Marriott needed a change. He knew he wanted a career in environmental law that kept his ethics at the forefront and made him feel like he was contributing to society. Oregon Law was the logical choice.
Prior to attending law school, Marriott also served as a wilderness instructor for Outward Bound. The Philadelphia native, who has lived all over the country, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and a master’s degree from Indiana University-Bloomington. In addition to his law degree, Marriott also earned a statement of completion in Sustainable Business Law.
While in law school, Marriott was a member of the Oregon Law Review, Law Students for Sustainable Business (renamed the Green Business Initiative Student Association in 2009), Oregon Law Students’ Public Interest Fund, StreetLaw, and the Sustainable Advantage Conference Committee.
Marriot advices current students to talk to as many people as they can about their interests and to take the time to learn about the market for the job they want ahead of time so they can be prepared to hit the job market running.
