Adelaide Exchange Program

A study opportunity for University of Oregon students made possible by an exchange agreement between the University of Oregon and the University of Adelaide.

Adelaide, South Australia

Founded in 1836, Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia is known throughout the world for its quality of life and strong tradition of cultural activities. It is a city of approximately one million people and is the center of the economic, cultural, political, and social life of the State.

Adelaide is a well-planned and uncongested city. A parkland belt runs along the Torrens River and a green belt surrounds the central city. The mild climate is ideal for a variety of outdoor activities including swimming, sailing, windsurfing at nearby beaches, hiking, and exploring.

Adelaide is known as The Festival State. The Adelaide Fringe Festival is an internationally acclaimed open access event for artists of all art forms, and is the largest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. It takes place all over Adelaide. In 2010, the festival will run from February 19th to March 14th. The internationally famous Adelaide Festival celebrates the city’s love of the arts. The 2010 dates are February 26th to March 14th. The South Australian Museum houses the world’s largest collection of aboriginal artifacts. The Adelaide Central Market is also a must. The city of Adelaide combines creativity and liveliness with a low cost of living and safe and pleasant environment.

University of Adelaide

The University of Adelaide was founded in 1874 less than 30 years after the first settlers arrived. It is one of the country's leading research institutions and was the first to establish a Conservatorium of Music and was the first to confer degrees to women on equal terms with men.

The University of Adelaide's main campus reflects its late 19th century origins with a blend of old and new buildings in a shady, well-landscaped setting. It resembles the older English universities, with stone buildings, a 'great hall', enclosing walls and the Torrens River. Located on North Terrace, in the heart of the city, the main campus is close to restaurants, entertainment, parks, shops and the Adelaide Festival Theatre.

The student body is diverse with a broad range of social, economic, political and academic backgrounds. There are over 4,500 international students from 65 countries in attendance.

The University of Adelaide Law School is the third oldest and one of the most respected in Australia and has an established reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The law school covers all significant areas of law in its degree programs and as the practice of law has become more complex and specialized, programs have been developed to help practitioners broaden their knowledge of specialized areas of law. Academic Program

University of Oregon students will choose their courses of study with the assistance of Nicole Commissiong, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, at the UO School of Law. The course of study must comply with the American Bar Association’s Independent Study Program. Both the University of Oregon and the University of Adelaide will approve the student’s course of study. Students are to register in all postgraduate courses. Course descriptions are available on-line, http://access.adelaide.edu.au/courses/search.asp. (Note: You will actually be enrolled in courses at the University of Adelaide, taught by Adelaide faculty. This is a very different kind of opportunity than many study abroad programs hosted by law schools.)

Academic Calendar

Students accepted to participate in this program will attend the University of Adelaide Law School Semester 1 (March 4 - July 3, 2010). Orientation is scheduled for the week of February 15. Visa Information

After receiving Confirmation of Enrollment (COE) from The University of Adelaide, students accepted into this program are required to obtain a valid student visa to enter Australia for study purposes. US Citizens may apply online for an electronic study visa. Applicants from other countries may have to apply by mail or in person and the process may take longer. More information can be found online at www.immi.gov.au under the Visa and Immigration section. Please discuss any questions you might have with the Overseas Program Coordinator, by email or 300 Oregon Hall.

Please Note: The Australian government requires all international students studying on a student visa to maintain acceptable health and medical insurance with a preferred provider for their entire time in Australia. You will be required to pay for the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) when you pay your tuition fees. OSHC provides medical and hospital coverage while students are in Australia.

Please note that visa regulations and policies change frequently.

All students should apply for or renew (if necessary) their U.S. (or other) passports as soon as possible. Since many countries require visas, you should plan to have your passport available at least three months before your departure date.  If you have a passport, make certain it is valid for at least six months beyond the end of your stay.  Application forms for new passports and renewals are available at the main post office at the corner of 5th and Willamette Streets or online at http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html.
