Allie Apana, 2L

Where are you externing this summer?
I am externing at Davis Shapiro & Lewit, LLP, a boutique entertainment law firm located in Beverly Hills, California.

What are your responsibilities?

  • Researching and drafting memos detailing the terms of existing contracts between the firm's clients and third parties.
  • Drafting letters, contracts and other documents necessary for conducting work on behalf of the firm's clients.
  • Researching and drafting memos on the current status of the law on issues the firm's clients are facing, such as advice on the current California entertainment law, intellectual property laws and corporate legislation.
  • Attending client and executive meetings, such as pitch meetings or other discussions to negotiate or discuss client matters.

How did you find and secure this opportunity?
I secured this opportunity through one of the professional relationships I made networking at the annual SELF (Sports and Entertainment Law Forum) Conference, which took place at the Rose Garden in Portland last February.

What excites you most about this externship?
What excites me most about this externship is being given the opportunity to work in the entertainment industry, drafting and negotiating deals among artists, producers, and publishers, as well as having access to experienced attorneys from whom I can learn a great deal about the industry and the legal matters that arise.

What knowledge, skills, or experiences are you hoping to gain?
I hope to expand my knowledge of the entertainment industry, of drafting contracts, and negotiating deals, as well as to gain unique advice from the attorneys I am working for about how to make it in the entertainment industry, particularly in the music business.

How have your studies at Oregon Law thus far prepared you for this summer externship?
My legal research and writing class has greatly prepared me to write efficiently and effectively, skills I have utilized when writing memos daily to the partners of the law firm. Additionally, contracts class has given me great insight and knowledge on the basics of what a contract entails, and has familiarized me with the language in which a contract is written so I am able to read through contracts swiftly.

Do you have any advice for future students curious about securing externships?
Networking with lawyers and other professionals is key. There are many willing and helpful lawyers and professionals out there who want to help future students secure work experience and who can offer invaluable advice. I am where I am today because of the professional relationships I have made and developed with other attorneys, professionals, and professors. Their support and belief in me has opened many doors and has given me great opportunities, such as my summer externship, so I can move towards achieving my ultimate career goals.
