Comparative Indigenous Peoples Law

Spring 2019 • Law 792 • Credits: 2

Instructor: Howard Arnett

The course will examine the historical and contemporary legal and policy treatment of indigenous peoples in select countries with significant indigenous populations and developed legal structures addressing their status. The course is not a study of the internal law of the indigenous communities; rather, the course primarily examines the national indigenous peoples? law of the countries in which the indigenous communities are located. Students in this course will also cover the treatment of indigenous peoples under international law, in particular under the 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and other international agreements.
