Aug 15, 2017

As the University of Oregon School of Law welcomed students for the new academic year on Monday, August 14, Dean Marcilynn A. Burke made the following statement about the events in Charlottesville, Va. on Friday and Saturday.

“The strength of this country, this university, and this law school is in the diversity of and the contributions made by people of different births, sexual orientations, identities, political beliefs, and religious beliefs.

“I join President Michael Schill in condemning the hatred and ignorance expressed by the white supremacist and nationalist groups and the violence that ensued in Charlottesville this weekend.

“However, I am encouraged because I am a part of the University of Oregon, a university that values and supports an inclusive environment of academic excellence.”
