Biography

Professor Tippett’s research focuses on employment law, HR software, and the history of employment law and employment practices.  Her work has been cited by state and federal courts, and published in a variety of leading law reviews, including the Texas Law Review, Southern California Law Review, the Yale Journal of Law and Technology, the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law and Ethics, the American Business Law Journal, and The Minnesota Law Review, among others.

Professor Tippett’s latest article, The HR Software Loophole, published in the Stanford Technology Law Review, examines how software companies have escaped liability for employment law harms caused or exacerbated by software flaws.  Her 2025 book, The Master-Servant Doctrine: How Old Legal Rules Haunt the Modern Workplace, published by UC Press, reveals how modern employment law has been tainted by a centuries-old legal doctrine that gives employers tremendous power over workers.  She is currently collaborating on an employment law textbook for West Academic, scheduled for release in 2027.

In 2018, Professor Tippett testified before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and its Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace to discuss employment practices and the #MeToo movement. In 2017, Tippett testified before a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee about her research on drug injury advertising. She has also been an invited speaker at Yale Law School, NYU Law School, and Stanford’s Codex series.

At Oregon law, Professor Tippett teaches courses on torts, employment law, negotiation, and privacy and data security. She also oversees the Consumer Protection Research Grant program, which funds university research and organizes educational programming regarding consumer rights.

Before joining the faculty in 2012, Professor Tippett practiced employment law at the Silicon Valley based law firm, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.  She graduated from Harvard Law School in 2006 and Harvard College in 2002.  As a student, she spent several years working for the late Professor Roger Fisher, co-author of the bestselling negotiation book, Getting to Yes.

Her writing for public audiences has appeared in the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, The New Republic, Fortune, Harvard Business Review, Newsweek, Fast Company, Salon, the LA Times, the Chicago Tribune, among others.  She has also appeared on NPR, the BBC and other radio outlets in the US and abroad.
