JD Concentrations

Appropriate Dispute Resolution

Many legal problems can be solved before they ever go to court.

With its large number of clinics and skills courses, a concentration in Dispute Resolution is the ideal supplementary program for a hands-on, practice-based curriculum that provides you with the expertise needed to become skilled in resolving disputes and facilitating deals.

Our program offers you a wide variety of courses and clinics to choose from so that you can tailor the curriculum to serve your interests, from criminal procedure, to environmental and natural resources law, family and child law, or any other practice area.
 

Business Law

Gain expertise in the areas where law intersects with business—finance, entrepreneurship, estate planning, green business initiatives, intellectual property, sports, and the tax code. 

The program offers rich experiential learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. Courses, clinics, externships, and moot court competitions introduce you to a wide array of topics such as contracts, business associations, intellectual property, start-ups, bankruptcy, in-house counsel work, and tax.

Criminal Law

Criminal justice advocacy goes far beyond courtroom drama. Oregon Law prepares you for this complexity with a strong foundation in liability, liberty, and constitutional rights.

Through hands-on courses, clinics, externships, and clerkships, you’ll gain practical skills for careers as a prosecutor, defense attorney, or advocate in criminal justice reform.

You'll complete core courses like Criminal Law, Investigation, Adjudication, Evidence, and Trial Practice, plus specialized courses ranging from White Collar Crime, to Gender-Based Violence, International Criminal Law, and a Domestic Violence seminar. 

Our graduates work in public and private practice, appellate courts, and policy organizations, shaping the future of criminal justice.

Environmental Law

Working to equip the next generation of changemakers through practical learning and experience, the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center’s focus on public interest environmental law and commitment to innovations in environmental legal education have made it one of the nation’s most respected environmental law programs.

Students learn the regulatory mechanisms of environmental law and are exposed to emerging problem-solving tools in courses that prepare them for careers across a diversity of public interest organizations and government entities around the world. At Oregon law, faculty experts and students collaborate on cutting-edge research, build community around environmental advocacy, and develop new approaches for environmental challenges. 

From engaging the law to promote sustainability for ocean, coastal, and freshwater resources to evaluating land use laws, theories, and practices to ensure sustainable development in our communities, environmental law concentrations include:

Family, Child Advocacy, and Elder Law

Family relationships are complicated. When the time comes, a skilled lawyer is needed to advocate for a broad range of clients during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

Through an interdisciplinary curriculum, clinics, and externships—including domestic violence protective order clinics and child advocacy field placement—students gain expertise in issues such as custody, adoption, domestic violence, reproductive technology, and estate planning.

Our graduates are prepared for careers as litigators, mediators, policy advisors, and nonprofit leaders.

International Law

Oregon Law’s international law program combines a humanistic perspective with a holistic view of global challenges, preparing students to understand domestic law in an international context.

Through innovative coursework and practical experiences, including clinics and externships, you’ll develop analytical skills while exploring diverse legal systems and critical issues like human rights, immigration, and global business transactions.

As an international lawyer, you’ll develop expertise in research, writing, and comparative legal systems within political and cultural frameworks that lead to career paths at law firms, government agencies, corporations, nonprofits, international organizations, tribes, unions, and resource management firms on a regional, national, or global level.

Public Service and Policy

Make a commitment to protect communities and open doors to justice. 

Built on Oregon Law’s extraordinary legacy of public service, the Public Service and Policy Program nurtures a community dedicated to public service with opportunities inside and outside of the classroom to build connections, to advocate for the public good, and to engage in issues at the intersection of law and policy. 

Through rich academic offerings coupled with multiple avenues for practical development, you can chart career paths in the public sector, public policy, or public interest legal careers.

Sports Law

Offering a distinctive sports law experience at the intersection of legal education and world-class athletics, students explore a wide range of issues—from athlete representation and NIL agreements to intellectual property, compliance, and dispute resolution—while benefiting from Oregon’s unique position as the headquarters of Nike and Adidas and the home of the Ducks. This proximity to the heart of American track and field and collegiate sports provides unmatched opportunities for networking and practical insight.

Located just steps from the university’s athletic facilities, Oregon Law students gain firsthand exposure to the governance, compliance, and operational strategies that sustain elite programs. The Sports Law curriculum combines foundational courses like Contracts and Constitutional Law with specialized offerings such as Amateur Sports Law, Professional Sports Law, and Negotiations.
