Meet The Law Duck
Greeting visitors at the entrance of the William W. Knight Law Center, the Law Duck "Billie" stands as a vibrant reflection of Oregon Law's proud legacy and the generations of students, faculty, and community leaders whose work has strengthened the University of Oregon, the State of Oregon, and communities far beyond.
Designed by local muralist Chelsea Lovejoy, the Law Duck depicts the core dimensions of legal education, including legal writing, dispute resolution, and civic engagement, while incorporating Oregon’s beautiful landscapes as a reminder to enjoy and protect them.
The nickname “Billie” is a nod to the Bill of Rights, legislative bills, billable hours, and our building namesake William W. Knight, while reflecting the school’s commitment to an inclusive and welcoming community.
Commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Knight Law Center, Billie stands as a feathered symbol of continuity, public mission, and more than 140 years of Oregon Law history.
The sculpture was donated by the JP McNutt family and lovingly restored with support from Law Duck Sean Shimamoto, JD ’96.
“The Law Duck reflects our enduring commitment as Oregon’s public law school to be servants of the public, stewards of community, and champions of legal education as a force to shape lives and landscapes.”
