Biography

Megan McAlpin has been a faculty member at the University of Oregon School of Law since 2006.  In that time, she has predominantly taught Legal Research and Writing.  However, from 2018-23, she was the inaugural director of Oregon Law’s Academic Excellence Program, and she received Oregon Law’s Meritorious Service Award—the highest service honor the school bestows—for her innovative work. The second edition of Professor McAlpin’s book, Beyond the First Draft: Editing Strategies for Powerful Legal Writing, is being published in 2023. The book helps law students and lawyers approach the often-difficult task of editing their own writing, and the new edition include updated guidance and practice exercises.

Professor McAlpin is a past president of the Association of Legal Writing Directors and has served ALWD and the Legal Writing Institute through both committee work and leadership roles.  Professor McAlpin served as a mentor for ALWD's Leadership Academy and was a member of the editorial board of The Journal of the Legal Writing Institute for two years.
