The inception of the Michael A. Johnston award was his family's way of preserving and honoring his legacy, a life brimming with potential that was tragically cut short. The award inspires scholarship recipients to embrace life fully and strive to make a positive impact in society. The award is presented to an Oregon Law student who demonstrates resilience and perseverance in the face of personal challenges, such as a serious illness, much like Mike did.
Mike's journey through law school was marked by his battle with leukemia. Despite the challenges of treatment and the toll it took on his body, he displayed remarkable resilience. He managed his own medical appointments and chemotherapy sessions while continuing his studies and involvement in student government. His interest in environmental law was evident in his lifestyle as an avid cyclist and one of Eugene's early environmentalists.
Mike's personality was a blend of curiosity, thoughtfulness, and intelligence. He had a keen interest in music and followed Duck football, basketball, and track with remarkable enthusiasm. His participation in the Bike-Centennial in 1976, riding across the United States, and assisting his Aunt Margaret in her campaign for judgeship in New York City, showcased his adventurous spirit and commitment to public service.
