For over two decades, Oregon Law has excelled in dispute resolution education for lawyers.
Conflict is a natural part of life. Individuals, organizations, and communities must have sufficient conflict literacy as well as dispute management skills to navigate disagreements and decisions effectively.
The law school's Appropriate Dispute Resolution (ADR) Center, ranked #12 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, is the only program of its kind in the Pacific Northwest.
The ADR Center faculty are recognized for their outstanding teaching and cutting-edge research. Their courses provide rich opportunities for students to learn how to manage complex interactions through negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and a host of hybrid and other approaches.
How can students get involved?
- Pursue a concentration. Students interested in ADR can pursue an ADR concentration during law school. Through a combination of courses and clinics, students develop and practice the skills necessary to tackle real-world problems.
- Become a 1L ADR Scholar. During the application process, incoming law students interested in ADR are invited to apply to become a 1L ADR Scholar. 1L Scholars typically work with faculty on research and events.
- Do relevant work inside and outside the law school. Second- and third-year students may become research assistants for ADR faculty or work in external field placements and apprenticeships. Resolution Oregon, a state office housed at the law school that supports community dispute resolution centers in almost every Oregon county, is a local resource for students seeking practice opportunities in handling conflict.
