Legal Research and Writing at Oregon Law

Preparing Students for Real-World Practice

Legal writing is the primary tool by which lawyers accomplish their work. Whether writing to a judge, supervisor, opponent, or client, every lawyer needs excellent writing and analytical skills in an array of professional contexts. Excellence in legal writing distinguishes Oregon Law and our students.

Our Legal Research and Writing (LRW) program has been nationally recognized for decades.  Through innovative programming and commitment to teaching excellence, we continue to be leaders in the field, repeatedly ranking among the top five legal writing programs in the country.

Our mission has remained consistent for over 40 years: to prepare students for real-world legal practice.

Students learn from expert faculty to research legal sources, critically analyze the law to solve problems, thoughtfully organize legal arguments, and communicate those arguments clearly, confidently, and powerfully. These are the foundational skills necessary for success in their legal careers.
