Curricular Tracks
At the time of their application to the program, General LLM students may choose one of our three curricular tracks—American Law, Business Law, or Environmental Law.
Degree Requirements
Required Courses for Legal Scholars from Other Countries
Introduction to American Law and Practice (3 credits, Fall Semester)
This short, mandatory, course introduces LLM students from outside of the United States to basic legal concepts, principles, and procedures on the American system of law.
LLM Advanced and Persuasive Legal Writing (2 credits, Spring Semester)
This course seeks to improve students' knowledge of persuasive writing strategies and skills.
Writing Requirement
All LLM students must complete a written comprehensive paper or project in connection with one of the required courses for their chosen track.
Track-Specific Requirements
Students in the Business Law and Environmental Law tracks must complete required and recommended courses to graduate with a certificate in that track. Visit our LLM Tracks page to learn more.
Suggested General LLM Admission Timeline
OCTOBER
Submit application for admission
Submitting by October 15 increases your chances to obtain international student scholarships or domestic student scholarships
December
Receive notification of admission decision
Depending on when you applied, you can expect to receive an admissions decision via email within 4-6 weeks. You will automatically be considered for tuition funding support.
JANUARY
Respond to admission offer, pay $500 seat deposit, and explore additional financing options
The seat deposit finalizes your spot in the program and will be applied to your program tuition.
FEBRUARY
Begin visa process (international students)
Connect with UO's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office to provide the requisite documentation and secure your visa.
MARCH
Start housing search
Reach out to the Law & Conflict Studies Program Manager for additional guidance on housing options.
APRIL
Submit health documents (required) and request disability accommodations (optional)
Satisfy the health requirements for enrollment, and make an appointment with the Accessible Education Center to request accommodations support.
MAY
Pre-register for fall classes
You will automatically be registered for any required courses and complete a pre-registration form to indicate your preferred fall semester electives.
JUNE
Begin travel planning
Book flights or plan your route, and notify ISSS of your travel plans (international students).
JULY
Arrive in Eugene and get settled
International students coming to the U.S. with an F-1 or J-1 visa may enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date on your I-20 or DS02019.
EARLY AUGUST
Finalize course registration and participate in LLM orientation activities
You will be provided an itinerary of pre-semester activities designed to prepare you for the start of classes.
