Curricular Tracks
At the time of their application to the program, General LLM students may choose one of our curricular tracks:
Requirements for International Students
Foundational required courses
If you are a foreign-trained attorney or law graduate, you are required to complete two foundational courses. Together, these five credits provide an important foundation for international students entering US graduate-level legal study and are required of LLM students who earned their first law degree outside the United States. (These courses count toward your 24-credit degree total.)
Introduction to American Law and Practice (3 credits)
This short, mandatory course introduces LLM students from outside of the United States to basic legal concepts, principles, and procedures on the American system of law.
LLM Advanced and Persuasive Legal Writing (2 credits)
This course seeks to improve students' knowledge of persuasive writing strategies and skills.
International student enrollment requirements
If you are studying in the U.S. on an F-1 visa, additional academic enrollment expectations apply, including:
- Full-time enrollment each term as defined by the university and federal regulations
- Maintaining the minimum number of credits per term required for visa status
Oregon Law works with the University of Oregon’s international student services office to support your compliance with these requirements and can guide you on how coursework fits within both your academic plan and visa requirements.
Other Degree Requirements
Writing Requirement
All LLM students must complete a written comprehensive paper or project in connection with one of the required courses for their chosen track.
