Sports Law: Courses

Oregon Law’s Sports Law program is designed to give students the opportunity to learn, experience, discuss, and debate the application of law to the sports and entertainment industries and to pursue a career in these areas of practice. The combination of academic studies, networking, and practical training in legal writing helps students hone the skills necessary to succeed during internships and while pursuing professional opportunities.

In addition to its curriculum, the Sports Law program brings an impressive array of guest speakers from across the country in support of student learning opportunities.

Our specialized sports law courses include:

Amateur Sports Law

Examines the intersection of law and business as it relates to the management and regulation of intercollegiate and interscholastic sports. Topics include NCAA compliance, drug testing and speech issues, student-athlete publicity rights, the impact and role of Title IX, and racial equity issues.

Professional Sports Law

Examines the intersection of law and business as it relates to the management and regulation of professional sports. Topics include league governance issues, antitrust, labor law, intellectual property, and the regulation of sports agents.

International Sports Law

Examines the regulation of the Olympics and other international sports competitions. Students travel to either London or Paris during the one-week “J Term” and meet with prominent European and international lawyers associated with organizations such as the Barclays Premier League, the International Olympic Committee, the Wimbledon tennis championships, FIFA World Cup, the World Anti-Doping Agency, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Sports Marketing and Licensing

Taught by the lead North American attorney for adidas, this course examines how an attorney or agent brands an artist or athlete and guides that individual over the course of his or her career. The course will utilize a number of hypothetical young artists and athletes and will provide a hands-on experience for students eager to learn how an attorney can effectively handle the many legal challenges that arise at different stages of a client's trajectory, from obscurity to stardom.
